Alex Cuthbert OUT of Wales’ tour to New Zealand as winger undergoes knee surgery

  • Alex Cuthbert is to miss Wales’ three-Test June tour to New Zealand because of injury
  • Combined heel and knee problems mean the 25-year-old is out for 12 weeks
  • The winger is out of contract with Blues and the end of the 2015-16 season
Alex Cuthbert will miss Wales’ summer tour of New Zealand and could have played his last game for Cardiff Blues after undergoing knee surgery.

The Blues said that 25-year-old Cuthbert, who is already sidelined due to a heel problem, had flown to Sweden for the knee operation.

Blues head coach Danny Wilson said: “Alex will be disappointed to miss the end of this season with Cardiff Blues and the chance to go on the summer tour with Wales to New Zealand.

“However, this decision has been taken for his long-term health and so we wish him well.”

Cuthbert will now begin a rehabilitation period that is expected to take 12 weeks.

The winger has scored 15 tries in 42 Wales appearances, one for the British and Irish Lions in a Test and 37 in 79 Blues games.

And although it was likely he would have made the Wales squad for a New Zealand trip that features Tests against the world champion All Blacks in Auckland, Wellington and Dunedin, a starting place might have proved beyond him.
