Ball hitting the spidercam at Twickenham, strange law explained

There was a bizarre moment in the Autumn International between England and South Africa, with the ball hitting the spidercam.

The suspended camera can track up and down the pitch, as well as providing an interesting angle for things like penalties.

It’s not uncommon to be used in international rugby – anyone that has watched a major tournament match in recent years have been treated to the view.

However, there was some confusion after a clearance kick from South Africa in the second half fire directly into the spider cam.

The result if the ball hits the camera is a scrum to the the kicking from where they kicked it.

Because South Africa scrum-half Faf de Klerk kicked the ball from inside his own goal area, the scrum was instead from five metres out.

Social reaction:

One fan wrote: “Disgraceful of @WorldRugby to deliberately place that SpiderCam there because they’re so upset South Africa are winning. Put a stop to this now”

A second said: “Spidercam operator was in his bag with that shot”
