A candidate to replace Warren Gatland as Wales coach has ruled himself out of the running

Dai Young is prepared to turn his back on Wales and commit his future to Wasps.

The 50-year-old, who won 51 Wales caps and went on three Lions tours, was on the shortlist to replace head coach Warren Gatland when he leaves Wales after next year’s World Cup.

But Young, Wasps’ director of rugby, has ruled himself out and is set to sign a long-term contract extension with the Coventry-based club in the next fortnight.

“It is no secret that I am enjoying my time at Wasps and no secret that we are in discussions.

“Hopefully that can be sorted in the next week or so. I still think there is lots to do here and we can keep the club moving forward.

“We will announce it once the deal is done.”
