Danny Care puts ‘retirement on ice’ to sign one-year contract

Harlequins scrum-half Danny Care is set to sign one-year extension to stay at Twickenham Stoop, according to The Rugby Paper.

The playmaker has already taken steps towards a new career after dumping his long-term advisors Esportif to sign up with entertainment specialists Insanity Group, who already represent Radio 1 DJ Jo Whiley and former Spandau Ballet frontman Martin Kemp.

Former England star Care is set to continue playing for Quins until the end of the 2023/24 season, but joining up with Insanity is clearly looking at a post-rugby career in entertainment.

The second most capped Harlequins’ player of all time, the 35-year-old has been a prominent player at the club since his arrival from Leeds Tykes in 2006.

Care has been at the centre of three memorable days in the club’s history starting the 2011 Challenge Cup triumph over Stade Francais as well as the club’s two Premiership Finals in 2012 and 2021. The club captain during the 2015/16 and 2016/17 seasons leading them to a European Rugby Challenge Cup Final before helping them back into the top tier of European rugby the following season.

Making his mark on the international stage with the England Sevens in the 2004 Commonwealth Games, Care made his senior international debut at the age of 21 against New Zealand replacing Richard Wigglesworth. A regular in the England squad, Care became one of England’s most-capped scrum-halves and was a key member of the 2016/17 world-record-setting win streak, as well as the back-to-back Six Nations titles.

In October 2018, Care made his 250th appearance for Harlequins and marked it with a trademark breakaway try against Saracens at The Stoop in the Gallagher Premiership. In April 2021, he become just the third player to represent the club on 300 occasions.

Was recalled by England for the 2022 tour of Australia where he played in all three Tests as England won 2-1.

#1. James Haskell: Richie McCaw (New Zealand)

Lifting the 2011 World Cup in his backyard was a fitting tribute to one of the greatest ever All Blacks, but he went on to secure true legendary status as he continued for four more years, breaking record after record and uniquely hoisting the Webb Ellis trophy for a second time.
