Despite his stellar form, the Exeter Chiefs number 8 remains firmly out of the England reckoning with Eddie Jones telling him that he doesn’t fit his system.
Jones revealed when he first called up Simmonds in 2017 that he wanted him to ‘put on some beef’ while Chiefs have wanted him to remain a more mobile operator.
After his debut, the England boss said: “Simmonds did pretty well, he’s a good young rugby player, we just need to get some beef on him now,” he said.
“We might have to send him down to Miyazaki in Japan to get him to eat some Miyazaki beef. Those Cornish pasties are clearly not working. He has a nice feel to the game, he doesn’t talk a lot and gets on with it. He’s a good prospect for us.”
