Eight wild rugby nights out: Buggy gate, dwarf tossing and the Calcutta Cup
8. John Jeffrey & Dean Richards vs the Calcutta Cup, 1988
It was not only Scottish pride that was dented after they lost 9-6 to England at Murrayfield, the almost priceless Calcutta Cup itself came in for some rough treatment itself.
9. Bath Rugby
Following the club’s European Challenge Cup semi-final defeat by Stade Francais in 2017, the squad were given permission to unwind last Tuesday evening after training at the Rec. However, things got wild as The Chronicle reported that a group of players ran naked across the pitch, a fire extinguisher was let off and a skills clinic organised by the club for youngsters was heckled.
10. Colin Smart
Smart is remembered for the infamous “Aftershave Incident” in 1982. While in Paris, after beating France in the Five Nations, England teammate Maurice Colclough emptied a bottle of free aftershave from the after-match meal, filled it with wine, and drank from it. Thinking that Colclough had drunk the aftershave and not wanting to appear upstaged by his teammate, Smart drank his bottle of aftershave. This made him very ill. After England medical officer Leo Walkden failed to get a response from Smart, he was required to go to hospital to have his stomach pumped.
