England flanker could be forced to retire by freak injury

Sam Jones is due to see a specialist this week amid growing fears that his career may be ended by the horrendous injuries he suffered during an England training camp, reports the Mail.

The 26-year-old has been out of action since shattering his leg and ankle while taking part in judo drills in Brighton in the build-up to the 2016 autumn Test campaign at Twickenham.

Eddie Jones liked what he saw in Jones — a powerful defender, strong carrier and skilful forward with the work-rate and dedication the Australian admires.

Jones was grappling with Maro Itoje when he was hurt in a freak accident, wrecking his hopes of a senior international debut.

Back in September, Wasps director of rugby Dai Young said Jones was set for a comeback in November but he said: ‘It was three or four injuries in one.

‘He broke his leg, his ankle, his syndesmosis (a joint between the tibia and fibula at the ankle) and ripped all the ligaments in his ankle. It was horrendous.’
