4 Charlie Ewels: Definitely grew into the game in the second half, offering much more of a carrying presence. Abrasive and mobile. 6/10

5 Maro Itoje: The England vice-captain bullied Japan early on but things got a lot tougher. Regained his composure after the break. 6.5/10

6 Courtney Lawes: Not as effective in the back-row but his usual tough-tackling self nevertheless. Won a crucial breakdown penalty 10 minutes from the end, with Japan pressuring the English try line. 7/10

7 Mark Wilson: Another bruising performance from the Cumbrian heavyweight. His tough tackling kept Japan somewhat at bay in the first half and he scored the crucial try to recapture England the lead in the second-half. 8/10

8 Zach Mercer: Huge work rate and appetite for fight when his side were on the ropes. 7/10
