“Forced to Retire” – 21-Year-Old Fly Half Monty Bradbury Retires From Rugby After Knee Injury

21-year-old fly half Monty Bradbury has announced his retirement from rugby, as he has been unable to recover from a severe knee injury. The Gloucester halfback sustained the injury last Summer, and despite battling back for the best part of 10-months, Bradbury was presented medical advice to hang up his boots.

This is a devastating blow for the promising fly half, who had been signed by Gloucester following the financial collapse of London Irish. Bradbury came through the ranks with the Exiles, and made three appearence for Irish senior team in last season’s Premiership Rugby Cup campaign. Bradbury had also achieved international honours whilst at London Irish, as he ran out for five caps with the England U20s set-up in last year’s U20s Six Nations.

Bradbury shared the news of his retirement through his social media platforms, and shared the following message on LinkedIn. Despite the early retirement from the sport which he loves, Bradbury explained what his next chapter will be after he finishes his academic studies.

“As one chapter closes…

“Due to a knee injury sustained in May 2023 and after following medical advice, I’ve been forced to retire from rugby.

“Rugby has been a huge part of my life since the age of 4, and has allowed me to meet brilliant people and coaches, as well as lifelong friends.

“I’d like to thank all those I’ve had the pleasure of encountering during this journey. Most importantly all those at both London Irish and Gloucester rugby for allowing me to fulfil my dream of playing professional rugby, as well as for all their support throughout the recovery process.

“I’d be massively interested in expanding my network through work experience whilst I finish my degree. More specifically in fields such as law, accountancy, asset management and property.”
