The WRU have moved quickly on this and Warren Gatland, along with the senior player group, have decided to turn to Stephen Jones, who will replace Howley with immediate effect.
Howley had worked alongside Wales head coach Warren Gatland since January 2008.
Wales face Georgia in Toyota in their World Cup opener on Monday.
