Luther Burrell gets England recall

  • Ollie Devoto and Josh Beaumont have been withdrawn from the England squad
  • Northampton’s Luther Burrell replaces Devoto
  • Beaumont sustained a dislocated shoulder while playing for Sale Sharks
  • Burrell could be in line to face Ireland in the Six Nations on Saturday
Luther Burrell took the first significant step towards resurrecting his Test career on Sunday night when he was summoned to join the England squad ahead of the showdown with Ireland at Twickenham.

The 28-year-old Northampton centre suffered the cruellest cut of all in the build-up to the World Cup when he lost out to Sam Burgess.

That contentious decision, which saw Sam Burgess selected in his place, left him ‘broken’ and after being given time off by his club, he took a while to find his form again.

Burrell replaces Bath’s Ollie Devoto, who suffered a concussion while playing against Wasps this weekend.

Meanwhile, Beaumont sustained a dislocated shoulder while playing for Sale Sharks against Worcester Warriors on Saturday. The number eight is unlikely to play any further part in England’s championship campaign.
