Renowned referee Nigel Owens has revealed the five best captains he’s officiated during his career, with a surprise name topping the list.

Speaking to Wales Online, Owens made it clear from the outset that he wouldn’t be including any Welsh players in his selection.
“I won’t be picking any Welsh players because I haven’t refereed them in international matches,” Owens explained.
“That said, here are my top Test captains, Welshmen excluded.”
While there are always some notable absentees from lists like this, each captain chosen is certainly deserving of Owens’ admiration.

Owens said: Some people will be surprised at this one to start off. His misfortune was perhaps to be leading England during a difficult time, but he always gave everything for the cause, encouraging others to follow suit, and he was a nice guy off the pitch.”
