Sevens international heading to the NFL

Canada Sevens player Adam Zaruba has traded in his rugby boots for a shot at glory in the NFL after inking a deal with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Zaruba, who played as a forward for Canada in the World Rugby Sevens series, tried out for the Eagles over the weekend and impressed them enough to earn a contract offer on Monday.

The 26-year-old last played organised American football in high school and will play as a tight end for the Eagles.

“It will be a really awesome thing for me as an athlete,” Zaruba told The Province when asked about the opportunity to play in the NFL.

“The window here is very small.”

Zaruba is trying to follow in the footsteps of Jarryd Hayne, who played professional rugby league in Australia before joining the San Francisco 49ers as a running back in 2015.
