Steve Diamond slams his own team after ‘pathetic and embarrassing’ thrashing

Newcastle ended an 11-game Premiership run without a win as they ran in six tries to leapfrog Worcester in the table with a 45-10 bonus-point victory.

“It was a wholly pathetic performance. It was inexcusable to perform as professionals like that,” said Worcester boss Steve Diamond after the game.

“We didn’t raise ourselves to the challenge in any area of the game and Newcastle, who are a good, hard working side. They came and put us to bed… it was embarrassing!

“I feel for the Worcester support base. We were not at the races. We can make excuses that they were poorly during the week but we trained reasonably well over the last few days and there were no excuses for that.

“We were completely off centre. We didn’t compete in any area whatsoever. We couldn’t string two passes together or keep hold of the ball. Our penalty count was probably the lowest simply because we were never in the action.

“I put the onus on myself to get them back up now but I might change my mind about giving them the week off now.”
