The significant impact Eddie Jones had on Gareth Southgate ahead of Euro 2024

Gareth Southgate looks to his ‘finishers’ at Euro 2024, a term first coined by former England rugby boss Eddie Jones.

Southgate, whose tenure as England manager is the longest since Sir Bobby Robson’s from 1982 to 1990, has been open about his impending departure.

Eddie Jones faced ridicule when he first rebranded replacements as ‘finishers,’ but the concept has since gained traction in various sports. It has become a significant part of the Australian’s legacy, with Southgate now adopting the term for Euro 2024.

“We pick people specifically to finish the game for us,” Jones explained in 2017.

Jamie George echoed this sentiment at the time, saying: “We don’t ever see ourselves as ‘the bench’. Everyone wants to start, but we are all committed to making an impact. Eddie places great importance and pressure on us, and we have to respond.”

Jones and Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta are part of the same high-performance coaching WhatsApp group, possibly influencing Arteta’s adoption of the terminology at Arsenal last year.

Arteta noted: “I have to get into the substitutes’ minds; we don’t have anything like it so far.”

Daily Mail’s England Rugby team of the future from 2012 didn’t age well… Where are they now 12 years on?

n 2012, the Daily Mail’s website looked ahead and predicted which young talents might one day form the core of the England team.

While we usually wouldn’t be overly critical of inaccurate predictions when looking back with perfect hindsight (we’ve certainly made our fair share of mistakes over the years!), it’s hard to resist a bit of skepticism when it comes to the Mail. So, let’s just shrug it off and move on!
