“A man of few words” – Nigel Owens ranks his top 5 captains he refereed

Nigel Owens had an illustrious international career as a referee and his named his five stand-out captains with a surprising England star making the cut.

#5. Phil Vickery (England)

Given the nickname “Raging Bull”, he played in three Rugby World Cups, including as England captain in the 2007 tournament, and toured Australia and South Africa with the British & Irish Lions.

Owens said: “I always had a lot of time for him, found him a decent man, a good player to referee. He wasn’t one of those who would whinge at decisions, he would accept the call and get on with it.

“As a player, at his peak with Wasps during their European runs and with England in 2007, he was a formidable force.”

DID YOU KNOW? The son of a dairy farmer, Vickery was born to Cornish parents in BarnstapleDevon, England and says he is proud to be a Cornishman and an Englishman
