Former England rugby star Tom Voyce, 43, is believed to have died after his car went into the River Aln, according to Northumbria Police.

The vehicle was recovered from the river, but officers were unable to locate Voyce. It’s thought he was swept away by strong currents while attempting to escape the car.
Chief Superintendent Helena Barron shared:
“This is an extremely tragic incident, and our thoughts are very much with Tom’s loved ones at this time. Our officers continue to support his family and we would ask that their privacy is respected.”
She added that “extensive inquiries” have been underway since the alarm was raised, including searches by specialist teams.

The heavy rain brought by Storm Darragh over the weekend significantly raised the level of the River Aln, which police say contributed to the incident.
A Rugby Career Remembered
Voyce enjoyed an illustrious career, representing Wasps, Bath, and Gloucester before retiring from rugby in 2013. He had been living in Alnwick since 2020.

Gloucester Rugby added:
“It is desperately sad to hear the distressing news regarding our former player and friend, Tom Voyce. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Tom’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.”
