Ireland have received an injury update ahead of Saturday’s second Nations Championship fixture against Japan, with Andy Farrell’s side looking to build on their dramatic opening-round victory over Australia.

The men in green edged out the Wallabies 33-31 in a thrilling contest in Sydney last weekend to make the perfect start to the inaugural Nations Championship. Their attention has now turned to Japan, with the second-round clash taking place at McDonald Jones Stadium in Newcastle on Saturday (8.10pm local time, 11.10am Irish time).
Ireland have been dealt one enforced setback, however, with prop Jeremy Loughman ruled out after failing concussion protocols following the victory over Australia.
Wing Rob Baloucoune also remains a doubt after missing the Wallabies encounter due to a hamstring injury. The Ulster speedster will continue to be assessed throughout the week before a final decision is made on his availability.
In a boost for the coaching staff, there are no other fresh injury concerns following the bruising encounter against Australia, allowing Ireland to continue preparations with an otherwise fully fit squad.
A victory over Japan would put Ireland in a commanding position heading into the final round of the Southern Series, when thet men in green take on the All Blacks at Eden Park. Ireland’s team to face Japan will be announced on Thursday morning (8am local time).
