Andy Farrell could name former England international Kieran Brookes in his Ireland squad for the Nations Championship when it is announced later today.
Ireland are set to face Argentina, Fiji and South Africa at the Aviva Stadium before travelling to London for the Finals Weekend at Allianz Stadium.
Farrell’s side will be aiming to arrive as the highest-ranked team in the Northern Hemisphere, which would secure them a place in the inaugural final.
They have put themselves in a strong position after winning two of their three summer matches.
However, Ireland may need three victories from three, including against reigning world champions South Africa, to finish top of the standings.
One player who could come into contention is 36-year-old prop Brookes, who recently joined Munster.
The former England international ended his contract with Top 14 outfit Perpignan a year early to move to the Irish province, opening the door to a potential change of international allegiance.
Brookes has already made four appearances for Munster this season and has impressed with his performances, strengthening his case for a possible call-up.
Born in England, he previously represented Ireland at several age-grade levels, including under-18, under-19 and under-20.
He went on to feature for England at senior level, earning selection for their 2015 Rugby World Cup squad before making appearances during the 2016 Six Nations.
After returning from injury, Brookes was part of the squad that secured the Grand Slam.
His last England appearance came in 2016, meaning he has long since served the stand-down period required under World Rugby regulations to switch international allegiance.

Interestingly, Brookes began his rugby career as a hooker before switching to prop. He has also previously named Ireland legend Keith Wood as his rugby hero.
Farrell was part of England’s coaching staff during Brookes’ time in the international set-up, so the Ireland head coach will already be familiar with the front-rower. A reunion could now be on the cards.
Should he win selection, Brookes would join a relatively rare group of players to have represented both England and Ireland at senior international level, despite the number of players who have been eligible to play for both countries over the years.
