The quest to become the highest-paid rugby player in the world game is not a goal that most stars begin their career aiming for.
Team success is the driving force behind the motivations of most players, with individual glory coming second.
The list’s combined haul is up 11% from the 2019-20 season.
Highest paid people in rugby:
10. Nigel Owens £620k (Referee)
With a combination of running his farm, TV appearances and refereeing test, club and local matches, the popular Welshman reportedly was the highest-paid referee in the world in 2020 prior to his international retirement.
9. STEVE LUATUA £650k (Bristol Bears)
Didn’t make any friends within the All Blacks hierarchy when he decided to cash in on his extreme rugby talent, signing for Bristol in 2017. Has since signed a two-year contract extension. The All Blacks aren’t allowed by the New Zealand Rugby Union to pick exiles.
8. OWEN FARRELL £750k (Saracens)
The England captain signed his deal a while ago. It’s set to run until 2022 when he can expect to earn an increase again wherever he decides to play, assuming rugby hasn’t completely decided to tighten its belt by then.
