All Blacks legend Sonny Bill Williams has revealed he underwent life-saving open-heart surgery after doctors discovered a serious heart defect.
The 41-year-old shared his ordeal in an emotional 24-minute YouTube video titled My Heart Stopped.
The problem came to light during a routine check-up following neck surgery earlier this year.
Doctors warned Williams that his heart had grown to 7.5cm and was at risk of rupturing.
“So, if I didn’t go in and get it checked, they wouldn’t know,” Williams explained.
He added that a person could look perfectly healthy before suddenly dropping dead.

Williams underwent surgery in Melbourne, with wife Alana documenting parts of his recovery.
The two-time Rugby World Cup winner admitted the days that followed were terrifying.
“It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done. Day two, honestly, I thought I wasn’t going to make it.”
He also revealed that he suffered hallucinations following the operation.
Surgeon Dr Michael O’Keefe confirmed Williams had undergone a Ross procedure to replace his aortic valve.
Remarkably, doctors believe the condition may have affected his sporting career for years.
Williams said he had struggled with his fitness from his late twenties.
Thankfully, the operation was successful, with doctors telling him his heart now works more efficiently.
