Bunnings NPC Final: Canterbury reclaim title after stunning triumph over Otago

The final brought together the two top qualifiers, and it was Canterbury who produced a devastating second-half burst, scoring three tries in 10 minutes to secure the win. Otago, despite a bright start, were left chasing an impossible deficit in the final quarter.

The match began at a frenetic pace, with Otago halfback Dylan Pledger making an early impact. A clever pass from No.8 Christian Lio-Willie set up prop Abraham Pole, who found Thomas Umaga-Jensen, and the New Zealand U20 international touched down to open the scoring. Canterbury responded swiftly, with lock Jamie Hannah carving through the Otago defence. The move eventually found Dallas McLeod, who dived over in the corner to level the scores.

Otago regained the lead in the 18th minute through a well-worked five-metre scrum. Lio-Willie nearly scored himself, but the ball was recycled for flanker Luke Casey, who crossed under the posts to reward a strong campaign. Canterbury hit back via a lineout maul, with hooker Brodie McAlister touching down, leaving the visitors narrowly ahead at 14-10 at the break, thanks to first five-eighth Cameron Millar’s conversions.

The second half was where Canterbury seized control. Otago’s failure to secure a lineout five minutes after the restart allowed the hosts to break quickly. Braydon Ennor’s sharp distribution found McLeod, who fed Manasa Mataele on the wing. The speedster outpaced fullback Sam Gilbert to extend the lead. Canterbury kept the pressure high, with Ennor eventually collecting his own rebound to touch down for his second try.

Mataele then combined with first five-eighth Andrew Knewstubb and halfback Louie Chapman to score another, highlighting Canterbury’s dominant forward and backline interplay. Otago rallied, with replacement Finn Hurley linking with Josh Whaanga, before prop Benjamin Lopas forced his way over to keep the scoreline respectable at 31-21.

However, Canterbury’s forwards delivered a punishing finish. Replacement prop Gus Brown powered through to score, leaving Otago chasing once more. They did reply with a try for Umaga-Jensen, but Canterbury skipper Tom Christie soon booted the ball into touch to seal the victory.

The win underlined Canterbury’s ability to execute under pressure, with their pack dominance and clinical backline finishes proving decisive. For Otago, it was a valiant effort, but ultimately, the combination of early defensive lapses and Canterbury’s second-half explosion proved too much.

Canterbury now lift the Bunnings NPC trophy for the first time in six years, capping a season of smart, attacking rugby and proving once again why they are one of New Zealand’s premier provincial sides.
