Dan Carter got caught drink-driving – six other rugby legends who fell foul of the law

World Cup winners, British & Irish Lions and England internationals have all faced bans, fines and court appearances after drink-driving incidents.

From an infamous golf buggy journey to a World Cup winner receiving a three-year ban, here are seven high-profile cases.

One of the greatest players in rugby history, Carter was caught drink-driving in Paris in February 2017.

The former All Blacks fly-half was stopped by police near the Champs-Élysées while driving his Land Rover.

Reports at the time said Carter recorded 0.98g of alcohol per litre of blood, almost twice France's legal limit of 0.5g.

Carter was not arrested, but his driving licence was immediately suspended. and he swiftly lost a major car sponsorship.

The two-time Rugby World Cup winner subsequently apologised, admitting he had made a "massive error of judgement".

He was later handed a five-month suspended driving ban and a €1,000 fine.

England's 2003 Rugby World Cup winner Mike Tindall has two drink-driving convictions.

His most high-profile case came after he was stopped on the M4 near Newbury in March 2008 following a day at Cheltenham.

Police said his Range Rover had been driven erratically before entering a service station.

Tindall was found to have 91mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood, above the then legal limit of 80mg.

He had reportedly consumed beer, seven glasses of champagne and a vodka and Red Bull the previous day.

Tindall pleaded guilty and was eventually handed a three-year driving ban and £500 fine.

The lengthy ban reflected the fact that it wasn't his first offence. He had previously been convicted of drink-driving in 2000, when he was banned for 16 months.

Former Wales and British & Irish Lions star Andy Powell was at the centre of one of rugby's most bizarre off-field stories.

Following Wales' dramatic Six Nations victory over Scotland in Cardiff in 2010, Powell embarked on an early-morning journey in a golf buggy.

He was arrested after being found with the buggy near an M4 service station.

Powell later pleaded guilty to driving a mechanically propelled vehicle while unfit through drink.

He was banned from driving for 15 months and fined.

The incident also had consequences for his rugby career, with Powell removed from Wales' Six Nations squad.

Former England fly-half Danny Cipriani was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving following a collision in Chelsea in June 2015.

Cipriani had been out following England's match against the Barbarians at Twickenham.

His Mercedes was involved in a collision with a Toyota in the early hours before he was arrested.

Cipriani denied the charge but was subsequently convicted following a trial in 2016.

He was banned from driving for 18 months and fined £4,500.

England scrum-half Danny Care was arrested for drink-driving on New Year's Day 2012.

The incident came during a difficult period off the field for the Harlequins star and followed another alcohol-related arrest weeks earlier.

Care later pleaded guilty to drink-driving.

He was fined £3,000 and banned from driving for 16 months.

The incident also damaged his international prospects, with Care left out of England's Six Nations squad.

England great Marlie Packer pleaded guilty to drink-driving following a collision in 2018.

The Rugby World Cup winner was banned from driving after appearing in court.

It also emerged during proceedings that Packer had a previous drink-driving conviction from 2007, when she was also convicted of failing to stop following a collision.

Following the later offence, Packer issued an apology through her club and acknowledged that her decision to drive had been unacceptable.

Wales and British & Irish Lions legend Scott Gibbs was charged with drink-driving in 1993, shortly before he was due to tour New Zealand with the Lions.

The powerful centre spent around 12 hours in police custody following the incident.

Gibbs subsequently admitted drink-driving as well as taking a vehicle without consent and driving without insurance.

He was reportedly more than twice the permitted alcohol limit.

Gibbs was fined £2,160 and banned from driving for two years.
