Decision made on Cheslin Kolbe's future

The two-time World Cup winner has often been linked with a move back to South Africa since departing the Stormers in 2017. Since then, his career has taken him to Toulouse and Toulon, before he made the switch to Japan in 2023.

In addition to the two World Cup titles in 2019 and 2023, he was nominated for the 2019 World Rugby Player of the Year award, ultimately losing out to teammate Pieter-Steph du Toit.

During this time, speculation about a Stormers return has been constant, with the franchise previously addressing rumours of negotiations before his move to Suntory Sungoliath.

Stormers director of rugby John Dobson has openly expressed his interest in bringing Kolbe back.

“Cheslin is someone we will definitely talk to. He is one of us. We believe he can fill a leadership role and play until 2029,” he told Netwerk24.

However, any potential move is not being considered right now.

Roc Nation Sports International president Michael Yormark confirmed that Kolbe remains committed to his current contract in Japan, which runs until the end of the 2026–27 season and reportedly earns him between ¥130–155 million per year.

“For the foreseeable future, that is where he will be,” Yormark told The Star

“It is a great opportunity for him. A couple of years out from the World Cup, you start thinking about what that final chapter might look like. I think every player wants to come home.

"However, that is something Cheslin, [wife] Layla and the family will consider at the appropriate time. Right now, his career is in Japan.”

Yormark also noted how well Kolbe has adapted to his new environment.

“He is healthy, playing exceptionally well, and has picked up quite a few Player of the Match awards. He has settled in very nicely in Japan, is a well-liked teammate, respected by the organisation, and has integrated into the community.”
