Former Scotland Captain Stuart Hogg Stripped of MBE

Hogg, who was awarded an MBE in the 2024 New Year Honours for services to rugby, has now had the honour “cancelled and annulled” following his conviction for domestic abuse.

The decision comes after the fullback pleaded guilty in 2024 to a domestic abuse charge involving his estranged wife, Gillian. Hogg admitted shouting, swearing and behaving in an abusive manner during the incident.

The court handed the former Scotland skipper a one-year community payback order after he entered the guilty plea.

Calls for the honour to be removed began almost immediately after the case concluded, with critics arguing that someone convicted of domestic abuse should not retain a royal honour.

Now those calls have been answered, with Hogg’s name appearing on the official list of individuals whose honours have been forfeited.

Despite the controversy, Hogg remains one of the most decorated players in Scottish rugby history. The former Glasgow Warriors star earned over 100 international caps for Scotland and featured on three British & Irish Lions tours.

Currently playing his club rugby in France with Montpellier, Hogg also sits among Scotland’s all-time leading try scorers and was widely regarded as one of the most influential fullbacks of his generation.

But with the Gazette notice confirming the forfeiture of his MBE, one of the biggest honours of his career has now been formally removed.
