James Lowe confirms new club, replaces Springbok star

Japan had long been viewed as the most likely destination for the Ireland wing, with Sungoliath consistently leading the race for his signature. However, as the announcement dragged on, speculation grew that another club could yet hijack the move.

Newcastle Red Bulls were among the teams linked with Lowe earlier in the process, but his preference to continue his career in Japan ultimately proved decisive.

The 34 year old arrives as the replacement for departing Springboks star Cheslin Kolbe, who is returning to South Africa to join the Stormers. Kolbe's departure created the salary space that enabled Sungoliath to complete the signing of the experienced Ireland international.

Lowe's exit from Irish rugby is also expected to bring an end to his international career. Under current IRFU selection policy, players based overseas are not eligible for Ireland, meaning he is unlikely to feature for Andy Farrell's side again unless an exception is granted. It also appears to rule him out of next year's 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia.

Originally from New Zealand, Lowe qualified for Ireland through residency and became an Irish citizen alongside his wife in 2025.

His move brings the curtain down on a successful spell with Leinster, although it followed a lengthy and high profile contract saga before his departure was confirmed.

During his time at the province, Lowe made 102 appearances and helped Leinster win the 2018 EPCR Champions Cup, before adding this season's BKT United Rugby Championship title. He also earned 45 Ireland caps after making his international debut.

Speaking after his signing was confirmed by the Japan Rugby League One club in the early hours of Monday morning, Lowe expressed his excitement about the move.

"To everyone in the Suntory Sungoliath family, my family and I are incredibly excited to begin this new chapter of our lives in Japan.

"I have some very special memories from playing there. I have always admired the passion for rugby, the respect shown both on and off the field, and the pride people take in representing their team and I am looking forward to learning more about Japan and its culture.

"It is a huge honour to join such prestigious club. I will do everything I can to earn the trust of my teammates, coaches and supporters.

"I want to bring energy, physicality and a positive attacking mindset to the team. I can't wait to get stuck in and I can't wait to meet you all!"
