Leicester Tigers release player after 13 years at the club

A product of the Tigers Academy, Wells made his senior debut at just 19 in 2013 against Wasps in the LV Cup. After a spell with Bedford Blues in the Championship, he returned to Welford Road for the 2016/17 campaign and has been a mainstay ever since.

The 31-year-old brought up 200 appearances last season and currently sits on 236 for the club, underlining his importance over the years.

Speaking about his exit, Wells said: “We’ve got a great bunch of lads and it’s always been a brilliant changing room. The fans have been incredible and it’s been an amazing place to play my rugby.

“My time here has been really special. We’ve had some tough periods, but we rebuilt as a club and I’ll always look back on it with great memories.”

Wells was also part of Leicester’s Premiership-winning side in 2021/22 under Steve Borthwick, featuring off the bench in the 15-12 final victory over Saracens at Twickenham.

One of the standout forwards to emerge from the Tigers system, Martin’s move to Saracens is arguably the headline departure.

The England international has developed into a powerful, dynamic presence in Leicester’s pack, and his exit leaves a sizeable hole in both physicality and leadership for the future.
