personally tried to lure him into an England shirt before his Wales debut.

Speaking on the latest episode of The Overlap’s Stick To Rugby podcast, the speedster opened up about the time before he won his first cap for Wales – and how the former England boss made a move to snap him up.

Now gearing up for his second NFL season with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Rees-Zammit is currently in the UK on promotional duty ahead of the Jags’ London games next season.

But it was his rugby past that took centre stage, as the former Gloucester flyer confirmed Jones had been sniffing around early in his career.

“Yes,” Rees-Zammit admitted. “I wasn’t actually English-qualified, but Eddie was asking if I was – and if I wanted to be involved. I’d done an England camp when I was younger.”

Legendary England No.8 Lawrence Dallaglio, co-hosting the podcast, jumped in:

“How long had you been at Gloucester at that point?”
“Two years,” replied Rees-Zammit.

Dallaglio followed up:

“So just one more year and you'd have been English-qualified?”
“Yes, it was,” Rees-Zammit confirmed.
