Red Roses Player Ratings - England 46-10 Wales 2024 Women's Six Nations

The Red Roses found their way to the try-line in a variety of forms, with head coach John Mitchell delighted to see so many attacking options within his side. Seven separate scorers crossed over for England, as Maud Muir, Zoe Aldcroft, Hannah Botterman, Lark Atkin-Davies, Rosie Galligan and Abby Dow built an unobtainable lead, alongside a brace for flying fullback Ellie Kildunne.

Mitchell made seven changes for this match, with rotation in play following the opening round win over Italy. Here are our Red Roses player ratings, following the 46-10 win at Bristol's Ashton Gate.

Did really well to keep the ball in play as Wales tried to find territory in the early goings. Covered across the back-field kicks well, as Lleucu George tried to find space amongst the England back-three. Wrapped up the first try of the second half, as Kildunne finished off a move that England made harder than it needed to be in fairness. The fullback then grabbed her second with a staggering finish through two players at 61 minutes.

Split the Welsh defence with an excellent run in the build-up to Maud Muir’s opening try. Did well to claim Aitchison’s 37th minute cross-field kick, yet was unable to get the ball down on to the try-line. Great awareness to call for space out on the wing, as she crossed over from close range for England’s sixth try.

Made solid dominant shots in the early goings, yet had her efforts hindered as Wales take an early lead. Spotted a gap and sold a stunning dummy, before sending a 22nd minute fly hack downfield to the chasing wings. Cuts back inside at 43 minutes when there was a multi-player overlap, but England still managed to get over for the try. A solid performance by a midfielder who only continues to improve.

Knocked the ball on in a dangerous area after three minutes, as England failed to clear the lines under heavy early pressure. Phenomenal offload at 36 minutes, as she found her midfield partner Meg Jones out of nowhere. Solid running lines, Heard battered her way over Wales time and again.

Darting runs from the off, yet was unable to ship a pass back inside to Kabeya. Great running option as she chased down and claimed the down-field kick of Meg Jones. Stunning miss pass at 45 minutes, as she found Abby Dow out wide for England’s sixth try, a great assist.

Presented with the kicking duties, yet repeatedly missed her conversions or struck the up-rights for a record of 3/8. Tried a subtle little chip through for Heard to chase at 14 minutes, yet had a little too much on it for the centre to gather. Preferred to send the penalties to touch instead of shots at the posts. Brilliantly timed 33rd minute interception, as she stole England a way out of their try-line defence. Not her strongest day from the tee, but commanded her back line well.

Eyes up and alert, a 10th minute break saw Hunt tap and go, but the scrum half’s attempted touch goes out on the full and brought no avail. Caught out by the ‘use it’ call, as the Gloucester-Hartpury halfback took too long to use the ball.

Wonderful options from the tip offs, as the powerful ball carrier provided good options with off-loads. Brilliant steal over the breakdown at 21 minutes, as England were pinned on their 5m line after constant pressure. Crossed over for a try at her home ground, as the prop muscled in to score at 23 minutes. Another big ruck turnover at 35 minutes, and the loose-head followed this up with a massive carry. A great outing from a prop in brilliant form.

Solid scrummaging against the impressive Welsh pack, and harnessed the early drives with solid drives from rolling mauls. Won the mental battle against her opposite number, with the small wins coming by intercepting overthrown line-outs and hooks against the head. Received some medical treatment after a heavy collision at 19 minutes. Came up with the ball for England’s bonus-point try, as the Red Roses utilised their tried and tested line-out maul.

Beaten by an early scrum, but turned her early goings around through scoring England’s opening try. Provided the all important supporting line for Abby Dow, to follow up on the wing’s blistering run. Won a strong scrum penalty at 31 minutes, as Wales’ threat on the England 5m was once again nullified.

Drove over for the second try of the match, as she marked her 50th cap with an all important try. Back in the England engine room with Rosie Galligan, as Abbie Ward found no place in the starting team, and Aldcroft Didn’t miss a beat with the alternated lock partner. Strong line-brake early in the second half, which broke into the back-field ahead of Kildunne’s first try.

Dictated the battle in the air with a 17th minute line-out steal from Welsh clutches. Thought she stole a second line-out at 25 minutes, yet the anti-air defence was knocked on. Flew into the breakdown with a reckless challenge, gave away a penalty and Kiera Bevan took the quick tap to score a Welsh try. Made her amends shortly after, as she scored from close range after a solid series of drives. Duly awarded Player of the Match for her efforts, as the lock never stopped battling on her way to victory.

Gave away the first penalty of the match, after she was caught at the bottom of a breakdown and halted the Welsh attacking momentum. Adapted well to her newfound role of blindside, and her added involvement in attack wider out in the park. Great effort in attack and battled equally well when throwing herself into tackles.

7. Marlie Packer (c) 7

Overheard time and again upon the referee mic, as England’s vocal captain lead from the front and bossed the decision making with confidence. Donned the ‘master of the dark arts’ as she played the ball whilst it was in the scrum half’s hands, which led to England scoring their third try through Botterman. Wrapped up by Kate Williams, and spilled the ball in a dangerous position just before half-time.

Unafraid to pick and go from the back of the scrum, even when England were under a good deal of Welsh pressure. Added an immense shove to England’s 40th minute scrum which earned a penalty before the break, and a subsequent try through Lark Atkin-Davies.

On at the half-time break as John Mitchell freshened up the front row. Powell continued on the solid scrummaging start that the Red Roses asserted on Wales. Hit a great line at 55 minutes but lost the ball in contact. Brilliant line break at 69 minutes as she makes 20m downfield.

Had to follow a strong loose-head performance in Hannah Botterman, yet Mackenzie Carson certainly had a crack at doing just that. The powerful scrummager kept the tempo high up front, and ensured that the Red Roses set-piece ran as seemlessly as it did with the starting forwards. Presented good hands to, as she shipped the likes of Meg Jones into space.

Solid involvement at the set-piece, and showed her subtle handling with a nice offload to send Connie Powell through a gap. The replacement tight-head stepped up, and like Carson, ensured that England maintained a good tempo of attack with the set-piece.

Penalised for a late hit on the nine at 67 minutes, in what was an unforced error. Ward made a replacement appearence at her home ground of Ashton Gate, and was reminding the local supporters of her defensive talents. The remainder of her hits were well timed, and Ward worked well around the park to boot.

(On for Marlie Packer 59’)

Involved right away with a darting run, evading and powering through defenders. Retained her spot amongst the replacements following her England debut last week in Italy. Maddie was dynamic in defence, as her impressive line speed caught the ball distribution off guard, and halted the Welsh attacking flow.

(On for Mo Hunt 65’)

The replacement scrum half brought a high-octane attitude off the bench, as she was utilised to snipe around the tired Welsh defenders. Linked up well with Zoe Harrison, as she distributed the ball at a quick pace, and ensured to not get caught out with the 'use it' referee calls.

(On for Holly Aitchison 65’)

Dropped to the substitutes bench for this match, after making her comeback from injury in the Six Nations opener against Italy. Harrison led the back-line for the final 15 minutes, and closed out the fixture to send England victorious at two wins from two. Was not presented with a kick off the tee, but found touch well from the boot.

Ended her nine-year wait for a Red Roses appearence, and she received a strong reaction from the Ashton Gate faithful. Described as one of the PWR’s best centres by John Mitchell, and Gregson certainly stepped up to the monicker with a solid outing.
