Gloucester have secured a major boost with England centre Seb Atkinson committing his future to the club after a four-team battle for his signature.
The 24-year-old has signed a contract extension that will keep him at Kingsholm until at least 2029, ending speculation over a potential move to a PREM Rugby rival.
Leicester Tigers, Harlequins and Saracens were all reportedly interested in signing the centre, but Atkinson has opted to remain with the Cherry & Whites, who currently sit top of the PREM table.
Atkinson arrived at Gloucester in 2022 following the demise of Worcester Warriors. He quickly became a fan favourite, impressing with his physicality in attack and defence, tireless work rate and consistent performances.
His displays have also earned him international recognition. Atkinson made his England debut against Argentina last summer and has since collected seven caps under head coach Steve Borthwick.
The centre has also made headlines away from the pitch thanks to his exceptional fitness levels.
In 2024, Atkinson completed the gruelling Bronco fitness test in just four minutes and eight seconds, setting a new benchmark in the PREM.
The demanding running drill tests the conditioning of rugby players, with Atkinson recording a time quicker than some of the biggest names in world rugby.
He finished four seconds ahead of Beauden Barrett and three seconds quicker than Hugo Keenan.
Gloucester head coach George Skivington welcomed the extension, highlighting the significance of keeping one of the club's key performers despite strong competition for his signature.
"This is a really significant re-signing for us. Seb had plenty of options on the table, so his commitment to the Club is a real indication of where Gloucester Rugby is right now.
"Seb has been exceptional for us since the day he arrived. He came with great physical qualities and an outstanding level of professionalism in the way he approaches his own development and the success of the team.
"He's the ultimate professional and a fantastic role model for any young rugby player in the way he carries himself on matchdays, in training and away from the field.
"We're delighted to get Seb's deal over the line and look forward to him remaining a key part of what we're building at Gloucester Rugby for many years to come.”
Atkinson also explained why staying at Kingsholm was the right decision for his career, pointing to the support he has received from the club, coaches and supporters.
"I'm really grateful to the Club for everything they've given me since arriving at Kingsholm.
"There's no doubt the faith the coaches have shown in me, and the time they've invested in my development, has played a huge role in shaping the player and person I am today.
"Playing at Kingsholm is a privilege, and I've been overwhelmed by how the Gloucester supporters have welcomed me and made me feel one of their own.
"I'm in a place where I feel valued by the coaches, the fans and my teammates. I'm enjoying my rugby and feel this is the perfect environment for me to continue developing and improving my game.
"Most importantly, I'm committed to helping bring success to this Club. When I took all of those things into consideration, signing a new deal was the only decision.”
