Another country on the brink of being BANNED from the 2027 Rugby World Cup

According to the Samoa Observer, World Rugby has given the Samoan government until Friday to accept a proposed review into its decision to withdraw recognition and financial support from Lakapi Samoa. Failure to respond or accept the review could reportedly lead to Samoa being suspended from international rugby for up to four years.

The development follows a meeting between Lakapi Samoa officials and World Rugby representatives on Thursday, with RNZ Pacific reporting that both World Rugby and Lakapi Samoa have been approached for comment.

The crisis stems from a bitter dispute between the Samoan government and Lakapi Samoa.

Earlier this year, Prime Minister La'aulialemalietoa Leuatea Schmidt announced his government would establish a rival governing body for rugby unless the entire Lakapi Samoa board stepped down.

He has repeatedly criticised the administration of the game in Samoa, claiming rugby had become "politicised" and accusing those in charge of mismanaging the sport.

However, World Rugby has continued to back Lakapi Samoa's constitutional governance. In June, it formally appointed Lakapi Samoa chairman Afioga Namulauuli Papali'i as Samoa's representative on the World Rugby Council, describing the move as recognition of the union's constitutional processes.

If World Rugby determines there has been unacceptable government interference in the running of the national union, suspension is one of the strongest sanctions available under its governance rules.

Samoa have already qualified for the expanded 24-team Rugby World Cup in Australia in 2027 after winning the Final Qualification Tournament last year.

A suspension would leave World Rugby facing a major decision over Samoa's place at the 2027 Rugby World Cup. Should the ban be enforced, the most likely replacement would be Belgium, who narrowly missed out on qualification after losing to Manu Samoa in the final repechage qualifier.

Samoa would not be the first country to suffer severe consequences from World Rugby.

Russia remains suspended from international rugby and World Rugby membership following the country's invasion of Ukraine, ruling them out of international competition until further notice.

Romania were also dramatically stripped of their place at the 2019 Rugby World Cup after fielding an ineligible player during qualification, while Spain and Belgium were also sanctioned over eligibility breaches in one of the biggest qualification scandals in rugby history.

For now, Samoa's Rugby World Cup dream hangs in the balance as the Friday deadline approaches.
