Brumbies new signing Tane Edmed excited for fly-half teachings from Wallabies legend Stephen Larkham

Wallabies fly half Edmed joins the Brumbies on a two-year contract for the 2026 Super Rugby season, having previously played for the NSW Waratahs. The 24-year-old has made the move to Canberra on a two-year contract, in the hopes to elevate his international pedigree leading up to the home hosted 2027 Rugby World Cup.

Edmed started his Super Rugby career in 2021, and during a stint with North Harbour (NPC) in 2024, he finished the New Zealand provincial season as the highest point scorer. Edmed was capped for the Wallabies in 2024 and now joins the Brumbies to replace Noah Lolesio, who is bound for Aichi in Japan.

The Sydney-born Edmed said some of his reasons for joining the team are development, and getting a fresh start. He hopes that he will soon be selected to play for the Wallabies once again, following steady guidance under Larkham, Rugby World Cup comes ever closer.

“Bernie’s [Stephen Larkham] been pretty big on the Wallabies boys coming in and getting up to speed on the detail,” said Edmed, “we had a bit of homework over the weekend to make sure that we're hitting the ground running when we get out there.”

Edmed joins the likes of Rob Valetini, Tom Wright and Ryan Lonergan, who bolster the Brumbies' Super Rugby squad with solid Wallabies Test match experience. Edmed added that he might be a little bit rusty to start, but the goal is to minimise that as much as possible. The fly half said he plans to lean on every single word Bernie says to learn the most he can.

“I'm already liking his coaching style and how he goes about things,” said Edmed when asked about Bernie helping him make the Wallabies 10 jersey. Larkham reclaimed his role as head coach in 2023 after a break as Wallabies attack coach and has led the Brumbies team to back-to-back Super Rugby Semi-Finals.

When asked what he hopes to bring to the team, Edmed said his core skills of kicking, passing and tackling are essential as a fly half, and that he will make sure he has his head around the game plans and game management. “I'd also like to get my running game back,” said Edmed.

“I feel like the last three or four years have been a little bit of an emotional rollercoaster and probably too much so at times and I think that's been a big part of the reason why I wanted to come down here is to try and get a little bit of consistency,” he said, “I can't say that I've really fully deserved to be starting all the time at the Waratahs when I probably wasn't playing my best so there's no hard feelings towards Tah’s.”

Edmed said he isn’t too worried about jumping from one team to the other, despite the strong rivalry between the two. “Everyone's a good bloke, and obviously there's going to be a little bit of ribbing,” he said, “but I think everyone understands that at the end of the day you're just trying to get better.”

Following the absence of key names like Len Ikitau, Edmed said there may be a little added responsibility. “I guess 10’s are going to have to have more of a voice than previously, but we've got really experienced guys in the backline that I've already noticed take a big role,” he added.

The Brumbies play their first preseason game on the 30th of January against Western Force. Edmed said it will be completely up to Bernie whether he gets played and that he’d completely understand the head coach’s decision either way. “I’d be comfortable with trying to get those combinations up to speed as quickly as possible,” said Edmed. “But if he wanted to give me an extra week’s rest, I wouldn't mind that either,” he commented.
