Chris Ashton rejects chance to play for England Saxons

  • Chris Ashton has rejected the opportunity to play for England Saxons this summer
  • The Saracens winger was surprisingly left out of Eddie Jones England squad that tours Australia
  • Ashton’s outstanding form has been central to Saracens’ bid for a European and Premiership double
Chris Ashton has turned down the chance to play for England Saxons after being overlooked for the senior squad’s tour of Australia, The Daily Telegraph has revealed.

The 29-year-old, who last appeared for England in 2014, was on Monday initially named in the Saxons squad for the two-game tour against South Africa A but then declined the place.

Ashton was a surprise omission from Eddie Jones England squad that tours Australia in June.

Since returning from his 10-week suspension at the start of last month that ruled him out of the Six Nations Championship, Ashton has run in ten tries as Sarries pursue an Aviva Premiership and Champions Cup double (which is more than the three selected wingers selected combined). The AusrThe

The Australian, however, opted instead to select Marland Yarde on the grounds that his potential has attracted the England’s coach special interest. Jack Nowell and Anthony Watson were also selected after their partnership excelled in the Six Nations.

Ashton is reportedly still determined to fight for his international place going for but clearly the frustration of missing out on the tour of Australia left him without motivation to play for a second-string side in South Africa.
