England international’downed six pints’ after a game and pulled over on M6 to be sick, court hears

England hooker Rob Webber swerved’ off the M6 into a services and was found passed out behind the wheel of his Range Rover, prosecutors said.

Sentencing, Jill Hodges, chair of the bench of magistrates, said: “You are a professional sports player and should be setting an example to children and those who follow your club.

“You had at least six pints and then drove. It is unacceptable behaviour.”

The court heard that Webber, a married dad-of-one, had spent August 6 watching Sandbach Rugby Club, where he is a coach.

Tina Cunnane, prosecuting, said: “Witnesses saw him swerve into the services and open his door to be sick.

“Webber told the police he had at least four or five pints after a rugby game in Sandbach.

“He decided to drive home to Altrincham and went along the M6.

“He said he realised he was being stupid and came off the road. He was sick and changed his t-shirt before falling asleep. He was woken by police.”

Mark Halsam, defending Webber, who used to play for Bath and Wasps, described his ‘fundamentally flawed decision to drive’ as ‘a moment of madness’.

He said: “He stayed for a drink and arranged to stay over with one of the players but realised that would be unprofessional and inappropriate.

“He has felt the wrath of his employers and had been fined significantly as part of the internal disciplinary process.”
