Esher Rugby Club have confirmed the appointment of Harlequins and England legend Mike Brown as their new Sporting Director, with immediate effect.
The former England full-back arrives with more than 20 years of top-flight rugby experience, having represented Harlequins, Newcastle Falcons, Leicester Tigers, the Barbarians and England — where he remains the most-capped full-back in history.

Big experience. Big ambition.
Brown is widely respected as a driven, strategic leader and will bring elite-level coaching insight, high-performance standards and long-term ambition to every corner of the club.
His role will go far beyond the 1st XV.
The 39-year-old will oversee all senior sides, working closely with coaching staff to deliver consistency, clarity and alignment across Esher’s rugby programme.
At the heart of his appointment is a “One Club, One Esher” framework — designed to unite players, coaches, sponsors and supporters under a shared vision built on performance, ambition and enjoyment.
Pathway focus
Brown will also work closely with Head of Player Development Pathway Harvey Scott, strengthening the link between Colts and senior rugby.
The aim is clear:
develop well-rounded athletes, support long-term growth and create genuine opportunities for players to progress into Esher’s senior sides — and, for some, the 1st XV.
Winterbottom steps aside
Brown replaces Peter Winterbottom, another former England international, who steps down after 10 highly successful years as Director of Rugby.
Winterbottom will remain closely involved with the club in an emeritus role as an “Esher Legend”.
