Northampton vs Sale player ratings: Saints outclass Sharks

Saints broke the deadlock after five minutes as George Hendy burst through a gaping Sharks defence. With 20-year-old Henry Pollock on his outside shoulder, the winger had the pace to get around Sale full-back Arron Reed and score under the posts. Fin Smith added the extras to give the hosts a 7–0 lead.

Operating at almost a point per minute, Saints soon struck again. This time it was Hendy once more, scything through the Sharks defence after England scrum-half Alex Mitchell ran an arcing support line to put him through the gap off his wing. Smith missed the conversion, but Saints led 12–0.

The pressure continued in the 17th minute as Saints executed the basics to perfection. Slick handling saw Pollock’s impeccable catch-and-pass release back-row partner Josh Kemeny, who skipped down the touchline before finding Toby Thame on the inside to dot down under the sticks. Smith converted to stretch the advantage to 19–0 in favour of Phil Dowson’s men.

Saints thought they had secured the bonus point moments later through England lock Alex Coles, only for the try to be ruled out for a knock-on.

Sale found a foothold through winger Tom O’Flaherty. After drawing the Saints defence infield, the ball was shifted wide to Arron Reed, who put the former Exeter man in for a spectacular diving finish in the corner. Rob du Preez converted to reduce the deficit to 19–7.

Saints secured their bonus point shortly after the half-hour mark. Kemeny burst through the normally well-organised Sharks defence before bamboozling Reed with an outrageous sidestep that left the full-back grounded. Smith added the conversion to make it 26–7.

The hosts emerged the stronger side after the break. A delicately weighted kick from Smith inside his own 22 found Edoardo Todaro in space, and the Italian made good ground before being hauled down. Smith then sliced through the Sale defence before feeding Hendy, whose pace carried him over for his second try. Smith converted to extend the lead to 33–7.

Sale responded with a second try, and a second for O’Flaherty, after Hendy’s pass was intercepted deep in Saints territory. Du Preez converted to make it 33–14.

Moments later, Saints were reduced to 14 men when Thame was sent to the sin bin in the 57th minute for head contact on Dan du Preez, with mitigation applied.

Sale capitalised on the extra man as Reed finished out wide following quick hands across the backline. Du Preez’s conversion closed the gap to 33–21.

Just past the hour mark, Saints captain George Furbank crossed after capitalising on a Sale error, finishing in the corner following good work from Todaro. Smith’s conversion took Saints beyond 40 points.

With the game entering its closing stages, Tom Pearson completed a clean sweep for Saints’ starting back row, cutting through unopposed to score under the posts. Smith converted to seal a dominant 47–21 victory.
