15 Elliot Daly: Started off with a monstrous 61-metre penalty before scoring a try. Error inside the England 22 then led to a South Africa try. 7/10

14 Jonny May: Created two tries but remains defensively vulnerable when left one-on-one. Scored a great try to set up a grandstand finish. 7.5/10

13 Henry Slade: Started the game really well but as the visitors began to struggle he frustratingly disappeared from the game. 7/10

12 Owen Farrell (c): Could be heard calling plays in every corner of the stadium but it was in vain. Scored a try and kicked decently for the most part but missed a crucial conversion in the second half. 7/10

11 Mike Brown: Showed great persistence to open the try-scoring but thereafter was a major part of a faltering England defence. Nevertheless, he was one of the away sides better performers. 7/10

10 George Ford: His outstanding distribution and creativity were vital to England's fantastic opening quarter but he looked rattled by the Springbok comeback and never regained control of the Test match. 6.5/10

9 Ben Youngs: Another who faded after a bright start. Not the scrum-halves worst performance, but in the end, he was completely outshone by his opposite number, Faf de Klerk. 6.5/10

8 Billy Vunipola: Had a difficult afternoon. Dropped an early ball but still the men in whites best ball carrier. 6.5/10

7 Tom Curry: 100% for effort but the Sale man was found to be a bit a lightweight in a colossal back-row battle. Hobbled off in the second half. 6/10

6 Chris Robshaw: Won a penalty for England early on but was completely outgunned by Springbok captain Siya Kolisi during the 80 minutes. 6/10

5 Nick Isiekwe: Was pretty ineffective and was replaced by Brad Shields after just 35 minutes. 4/10

4 Maro Itoje: His performance was very indisciplined and lacked composure throughout. Not one of his better days but did score a try. 5.5/10

3 Kyle Sinckler: Ran gamely into tackles and put his ample weight around as best he could. 6/10

2 Jamie George: The hookers lineout throwing was okay but he fell off one too many tackles. 6/10

1 Mako Vunipola: Energetic and persistent as normal on his 50th cap. However, he cost his team with a needless yellow card at an important part of the game.. 6/10
