Steve Borthwick’s men will want to set the tone early in this year’s Autumn Internationals, blending youth with experience as they look to build momentum toward the next World Cup.
Here’s how England could line up for the opener.

15 Freddie Steward

With Joe Carpenter unavailable and Elliot Daly injured, Steward looks certain to start, unless Marcus Smith gets the nod again. The Leicester Tigers fullback has once again proven his aerial dominance this season, making him a key figure under the high ball and a reliable option at the back.

14 Tom Roebuck

Another player strong in the air, Roebuck’s inclusion would balance England’s back three. Pairing him with a pace threat on the opposite wing gives England’s attack a new dimension. Tommy Freeman could also fill this spot, but Roebuck’s form might edge it.

13 Tommy Freeman

Typically a winger, Freeman is being tested at outside centre. England’s selection of multiple wingers in the training squad suggests Borthwick wants him to gain experience at 13. With his power, distribution, and rugby intelligence, he could thrive in this new role.

12 Ollie Lawrence

Back fit and firing, Lawrence is the standout option at inside centre. His physicality and line-breaking ability make him England’s best choice in a position that’s lacked depth in recent years.

11 Immanuel Feyi-Waboso

The electric winger returns from injury and brings much-needed spark to England’s attack. His intelligence, speed, and ability to exploit space make him a near-certain starter this autumn.

10 Fin Smith

It’s a close call between George Ford and Fin Smith, but with Borthwick building toward the next World Cup, the younger Smith may get the nod. His composure and attacking creativity make him a strong choice to guide England’s backline.

9 Alex Mitchell

With Jack van Poortvliet injured, Mitchell is the clear starter at scrum-half. His quick tempo and sharp delivery will be vital in getting England on the front foot.

1 Ellis Genge

Returning from a brief concussion absence, Genge remains England’s top loosehead prop. His power and leadership make him a certain starter, unless Borthwick opts for a tactical bench shift.

2 Luke Cowan-Dickie

With Jamie George entering the later stages of his career, Cowan-Dickie’s energy and experience could see him reclaim the No.2 shirt. At 32, he still has plenty to offer.

3 Will Stuart

England’s premier tighthead remains a cornerstone of the pack. Stuart’s scrummaging strength and consistency make him one of the first names on the team sheet.

4 Alex Coles

With Tom Curry out, Ollie Chessum may move to the back row, freeing up a second-row spot. Coles impressed over the summer and seems well-placed to start alongside Itoje.

5 Maro Itoje

Despite a delayed return to Premiership action, Itoje’s status as England’s leading lock is unquestioned. If fit, he starts—no debate needed.

6 Ollie Chessum

Likely to shift to blindside in Curry’s absence, Chessum’s leadership and work rate will be key. His versatility continues to make him invaluable to Borthwick’s plans.

7 Ben Earl

Dynamic and relentless, Earl’s pace and carrying ability give England an edge at the breakdown. He could even feature at No.8, depending on balance in the back row.

8 Chandler Cunningham-South

A rising star, Cunningham-South is viewed as a long-term option at No.8. With his physicality and explosive running, he looks set for a breakthrough autumn.
