France prop Uini Atonio has shared his first public update since being hospitalised following a serious cardiac event that ultimately forced his retirement from professional rugby.

The 35-year-old was rushed to hospital in La Rochelle earlier this year after suffering what his club described as a suspected heart problem. He was admitted to intensive care, where he remained under close monitoring before being stabilised.
La Rochelle later confirmed that Atonio would require a prolonged period of recovery, bringing an immediate end to his playing career.
Now, in a positive sign for fans and the wider rugby community, Atonio has posted on Instagram for the first time since the incident.
His first activity on social media came in the form of reposted clips showing chefs at work inside his restaurant, Uini, in La Rochelle — a subtle but meaningful update that highlights his growing focus on life away from rugby.
The venue, which opened last May, has become his main focus as he steps away from the professional game, with the restaurant — named after himself — also serving his own beer.
Atonio, who earned 68 caps for France and was part of their 2022 Grand Slam-winning side, had been a key figure for La Rochelle since 2011 and represented his country at the Rugby World Cups in 2015 and 2023.
Messages of support have continued to pour in from across the rugby world, with teammates, opponents and fans all wishing him well as he continues his recovery.
