"Going to be a superstar" - Warren Gatland ranks his three top breakout stars from Lions tour

The Ireland centre was probably the best Irish player of the Test Series [edging Tadhg Furlong] and will be 32 when the next series rolls around. If form and fitness stay with him, he would surely be pressing for a third tour.

Gatland said: "I thought Robbie Henshaw was excellent throughout the tour and he probably learned a lot from the experience four years ago. That really brought him on, really improved him as a player."

Simmonds excelled for Exeter Chiefs but England head coach Eddie Jones has been reluctant to use him in the Test arena.

Gatland said: "I just hope that he learned a lot from this tour, not so much on playing but from the other players around them in terms of the top players in the squad, in terms of their professionalism, the way they train, the extras they do, their recovery. He will definitely have benefited from that."

The Harlequins fly-half only won his England Test debut a week before he was called into the Lions squad.

Gatland said: “Marcus Smith is going to be a superstar in the game. He is incredibly talented. If he was probably at any other of the four home nations he would definitely have been playing internationals by now and hopefully he gets that opportunity going forward because he has definitely got an incredible amount of talent."
