"Misconduct ban" - Ireland's Bundee Aki set to miss the start of Six Nations

After the Round 10 fixture in Galway, Aki is alleged to have engaged with the match official team on several occasions in a manner which may be deemed to be in breach of the league’s Disciplinary Rules related to Misconduct (including Clause 3.1, 3.2 and 3.3).

An Independent Disciplinary Committee will meet today (Wednesday, January 28) to consider the Complaint in accordance with the URC Disciplinary Rules. Roddy Dunlop KC (Scotland) will serve as Chair, with Attie Heyns (South Africa) and Andrea Caranci (Italy) completing the committee.

Aki could be set for a ban, that may well rule him out of action for Ireland's 2026 Guinness Men's Six Nations campaign, which is set to commence away to France next Thursday.

Clause 3.1 – When discipline can apply
Even though World Rugby has its own authority to investigate and punish misconduct or corruption, the URC can still take disciplinary action. If misconduct or any anti-corruption offence occurs, both the individual involved and/or their club can face disciplinary proceedings and possible sanctions.

Clause 3.2 – What “misconduct” means
Misconduct covers more than just foul play on the field. It includes any behaviour, actions or statements — including posts on social media — by players, clubs, staff or supporters that are unsporting, insulting, or damaging to rugby’s reputation.

This applies whether the behaviour happens on or off the field, during a match or at any other time, and includes anything that could bring the URC, clubs, officials, unions or commercial partners into disrepute, or breach the competition’s participation agreement.

Clause 3.3 – Examples of misconduct
The rules make clear that it’s impossible to list every form of misconduct. However, any behaviour by a club, its players, staff or supporters that fits the descriptions above can be treated as misconduct and dealt with under the disciplinary rules.
