Ireland player banned for three weeks following incident

Ryan has been handed a three-week suspension for the incident, which occurred during the Quilter Nations Series clash at the Aviva Stadium.

Referee Matthew Carley originally issued a yellow card, but the sanction was upgraded to red on review after the lock was judged to have executed a dangerous clean-out on Springbok skipper Marx.

The infringement also resulted in Tadhg Beirne’s potential try being chalked off.

The hearing took place today, where Ryan appeared before an independent Disciplinary Committee on a charge of foul play under Law 9.20(a).

The panel—chaired by Wang Shao-ing of Singapore and joined by Romanian members Bogdan Zebega and Val Toma—agreed that the red card was warranted. Using World Rugby’s sanctioning guidelines, they set the mid-range entry point at six matches.

Because Ryan accepted the decision, has a clean disciplinary history, and presented other mitigating factors, the committee applied the full 50% reduction available, reducing the punishment to a three-week (three-match) ban.

The suspension rules him out of Leinster’s upcoming United Rugby Championship fixture against the Dragons, as well as their Champions Cup clashes with Harlequins and Leicester Tigers.
