Sale Sharks hooker Tadgh McElroy has departed the club after finding game time hard to come by this season.

The 28-year-old initially joined Sharks in October 2024 on a short-term injury cover deal through to the end of the 2024/25 campaign. He later secured a new contract ahead of the current season.
McElroy began his career in the Connacht academy before moving to Saracens in 2017, a switch that meant he missed the U20 World Cup that year. He stayed in England until 2019, also spending time at Bedford Blues, before returning to Ireland.
In 2021, he headed back to England, featuring for Bristol Bears, Ealing Trailfinders and London Irish, then joined Leinster on a short-term deal in October 2022.
He returned to Connacht for the 2023/24 season but was released at its conclusion. A brief stint at Ulster followed early in the 2024–25 campaign as injury cover, before he signed with Sale.
Despite limited involvement on the pitch, McElroy drew attention off it after being given a rating of 90 in the launch version of Rugby 25, one of the highest in the game.
His absence from Sale’s recent trip to Dublin to face Leinster raised eyebrows, particularly with Luke Cowan-Dickie injured and Nathan Jibulu suspended, as Ethan Caine and Alfie Longstaff were selected instead.
Director of rugby Alex Sanderson said, “We’ve parted ways, really amicably. He’s loved his time here, but was not really getting a look-in in terms of the pecking order. That’s partly through injury, the things you can’t control, and partly through form.”
McElroy has yet to confirm his next move, though Sanderson indicated he intends to continue playing.
He was due to be out of contract at the end of the season and made 29 appearances for the club before his early departure.
