Joe Marler’s shock recall to the England squad for the 2026 Six Nations

Joe Marler may have retired from international rugby, but the popular front-rower continues to play a key role behind the scenes with the national setup during the 2026 tournament.

Marler, who stepped away from Test rugby in late 2024 after winning 95 caps for England, has remained involved around camp in a player welfare capacity. However, his influence has stretched beyond off-field support, with the former Harlequins prop also helping guide England’s emerging front-row talent.

Sources close to the squad say Marler has been informally mentoring several of the younger loosehead props throughout the tournament, offering advice on everything from scrummaging technique to coping with the pressures of Test rugby.

The 34-year-old is understood to have previously spent time working with players during training sessions, sharing insights into body position, binding and how to manage referees at the scrum — areas he mastered during his long international career.

Marler has also been offering guidance off the pitch, helping younger players adjust to life in the England environment and the demands that come with international rugby.

Away from rugby, Marler has also found himself back in the spotlight after a breakout appearance on Celebrity Traitors.

His showing on the hit TV series has reportedly led to him being added into the mix for this year’s Soccer Aid charity match, where he could line up alongside a host of celebrities and former footballers.

While his playing days may be over, Marler’s experience and personality continue to make him a valued presence around the England camp.
