Here are five Six Nations stars who blew their chance to impress British & Irish Lions boss Warren Gatland today as England overcame Italy and Scotland smashed through Wales.
1. Elliot Daly (England)
A misplaced pass and an early defensive howler seemed to play on Daly’s mind as he ended up chasing the game like a headless chicken at times. Despite his late try, he just couldn’t quite bring the same positive momentum in attack that his back three colleagues did. It was no surprise that England legend Lawrence Dallaglio called for him to be dropped.
2. Dan Biggar (Wales)
Wayne Pivac was clearly unhappy with the fly-half; dragging him off after just 48 minutes. A penalty that missed touch seemed to be final straw after the playmaker conceded three turnovers and missed two tackles. Billed by some as a Lions audition, Scotland's Finn Russell certainly won this one.
3. Alun Wyn Jones (Wales)
The inspirational Wales captain rushed back from injury to be fit for the 2021 Six Nations, but thus far he seems to be operating at 80% maximum. Conceding four penalties, making zero metres, and missing two tackles is far from the norm for the most-capped player of all-time. An uninspiring display.
4. Billy Vunipola (England)
The rampaging ball-carrier once again didn't look himself; making very little impact with the eight times he carried the ball. You wonder how many more chances he will get in an England shirt - nevermind a Lions one - if his form doesn't improve quickly. Hopefully, he'll be back to his best soon.
5. Ben Youngs (England)
Fluffed a pass to Jonny May to spoil a promising strike-move in the first half against Italy, and lacked conviction whenever England’s phase-play lost a bit of momentum. Not at his best - which was not helped by replacement Dan Robson making an almost instant impact when he came on.
