The Wales winger was forced off late in the first half to undergo a head injury assessment, which he is understood to have passed. However, despite being cleared to continue, Rees-Zammit was still feeling the effects of the blow and was withdrawn as a precaution before the restart.
Bristol confirmed that he was stood down on medical advice, with Matias Moroni coming into the backline when the teams re-emerged for the second period.
Rees-Zammit will now be monitored closely over the coming days with European fixtures on the horizon, ahead of the announcement of Wales’ Six Nations squad later this month.
The win sent Bristol to the top of the Gallagher Premiership after a tense contest at Ashton Gate. Pat Lam’s side trailed for much of the night and did not take the lead until the 73rd minute, with Sale centre Rekeiti Ma’asi-White’s yellow card in the 70th minute proving a pivotal moment in the closing stages.
