Red Bull’s growing influence upon rugby could soon see one of Scotland’s key internationals make a surprise move to the Gallagher Prem. According to The Telegraph, Scotland and British & Irish Lions halfback Ben White has emerged as a top target for Newcastle Red Bulls.
The potential move gains added traction following the appointment of Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend as a consultant to Newcastle Red Bulls. A move to the North East would keep White under his national coach’s nose, as well as within close proximity of Edinburgh.
The Scottish scrum-half, currently plying his trade with RC Toulon, has been a standout figure for Townsend’s Scotland side, earning plaudits for his leadership, tempo, and control around the breakdown. White’s efforts were dutifully rewarded this past Summer, as White was called up to the British & Irish Lions squad for the tour of Australia.
White was a late arrival in the land down under, as the halfback was called up from Scotland’s tour of New Zealand and the Pacific Islands to reinforce the Lions’ squad following the tour-ending injury to Gloucester and Wales scrum half Tomos Williams. Now, with Townsend set to combine his role as Scotland head coach with that of advisor to Newcastle Red Bull, speculation is mounting that he could look to bring one of his most trusted players to the north East of England.
White’s connection with Townsend runs deep. Since making his international debut under the coach in 2022, he has become a mainstay in the national setup. Starting in consistent Six Nations campaigns and taking a lead role throughout the 2023 Rugby World Cup, white looks to have the Scotland nine shirt on lock as Ali Price continues to wind down his international career.
A potential move to Newcastle would provide White with regular Prem Rugby exposure and the chance to play a central role in Red Bull’s ambitious project. However, the transfer is far from guaranteed. Reports from L’Équipe this week suggested that White is close to signing a contract extension with Toulon, a deal that would keep him in France beyond the current 2025/26 Top 14 season.
