Yaqeen Ahmed is one of the brightest young talents in South African rugby, and tonight he faces the biggest challenge of his career when he makes his Stormers debut against the All Blacks.

The 20-year-old fly-half has already built an impressive reputation through the age grades and is tipped for a huge future. Here are 10 facts you should know about the rising star.

1 Born in 2006

Yaqeen Ahmed was born on 28 July 2006 and only recently celebrated his 20th birthday.

2 Position and playing style

Ahmed plays at fly-half and stands 1.75m tall, weighing 86kg. He has developed a reputation as a complete playmaker, combining composure under pressure with outstanding tactical kicking and an impressive all-round skill set.

Those qualities are essential for a modern No 10 and are already among the strongest parts of his game.

3 Developed at one of South Africa's top rugby schools

Ahmed first came to national attention while representing Wynberg Boys' High, where his tactical kicking and composed game management made him one of the country's standout schoolboy players.

His match-winning penalty in 2024 secured Wynberg's first victory over Paarl Boys' High in 36 years. The school has also produced the likes of current Springbok Zach Porthen, former Springbok Sikhumbuzo Notshe and former Springboks coach Gary Gold.

4 Already a World Rugby U20 Championship winner

Ahmed played an important role as the Junior Springboks claimed their second consecutive World Rugby U20 Championship title in Georgia.

He scored 11 points in the 16-5 victory over France in the final, kicking three penalties and a conversion in difficult wet conditions in Tbilisi.

Earlier in the tournament he made 143 metres with ball in hand, beat nine defenders, scored one try and provided two try assists while recording an 84 percent passing accuracy.

Despite missing the opening two matches through suspension following a red card, he returned to become one of South Africa's key players and also averaged 7.5 tackles per game during the tournament.

5 One of South Africa's brightest young fly-halves

Alongside recently capped Springbok Vusi Moyo, Ahmed is regarded as one of South Africa's most exciting young fly-halves.

Moyo made his Test debut against Wales in the Nations Championship at the age of 20, highlighting the pathway available for talented young players.

During this year's title-winning SANZAAR Rugby Championship campaign, Ahmed was the first choice fly-half ahead of Moyo. Later in the tournament he shifted to inside centre to allow both playmakers to feature together, showing his versatility and willingness to adapt for the team.

6 South Africa A experience

Ahmed earned his South Africa A debut against Zimbabwe in June as the hosts secured a convincing 40-0 victory.

The talented fly-half opened the scoring with an outstanding individual try and was one of the standout performers before his afternoon ended prematurely following a red card.

After chipping over the defence, Ahmed deliberately challenged Zimbabwe full-back Tapuwa Mafura in the air, resulting in the dismissal after Mafura landed awkwardly.

7 All Blacks legend backs his potential

Growing up, Ahmed admired Beauden Barrett, and the All Blacks legend has already spoken highly of the young playmaker.

"With him and Sacha, I guess the Stormers are in pretty good hands going forward," the All Blacks great told reporters.

"And the success of the Junior Boks in recent times has been superb. As I said, the team’s just been named, so I certainly will be paying respect to those named and just being aware of their trends and threats because obviously both nine and 10 are very talented, with great skill sets and running ability."

8 A player built for the biggest occasions

One of Ahmed's biggest strengths is his ability to perform under pressure. He consistently makes the right decisions in high-pressure moments and has shown a maturity beyond his years.

His game is built around exceptional tactical awareness, calm decision making, elite goal kicking, an excellent territorial kicking game, defensive commitment and an ability to bring the best out of the players around him.

9 Stormers debut and rise to the first team

Ahmed is set to make his Stormers debut in the opening fixture of the Rugby's Greatest Rivalry tour as the South African side takes on the All Blacks ahead of the four-Test series against the Springboks.

Before breaking into the senior squad, his performances for Wynberg Boys' High earned him selection for Western Province Schools and South Africa Schools, two important milestones on the pathway to Junior Springboks honours.

Under Junior Springboks coach Kevin Foote, Ahmed has continued to develop physically while maintaining the composure, vision and tactical intelligence that made him one of South Africa's leading schoolboy fly-halves.

10 Why he's compared to Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu

Stormers director of rugby John Dobson believes Ahmed has earned his opportunity against the All Blacks and says his rapid development reminds him of Springbok fly-half Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu's emergence in 2022.

"He’s come through much faster than we thought," Dobson noted.

"He did so well for SA U20s; that exposure. One’s loath to make comparisons, but it reminds me of a few years ago when Sacha was coming through.

"The same commitment, composure, and excitement."

"He’s pleasantly surprised us, and I think it’s a fantastic opportunity for him."
