newcomers to join the top flight in 2011… but can you remember the rest?
Henry Pollock has undergone a remarkable body transformation on his journey from promising schoolboy to England and British & Irish Lions star.
The Northampton Saints sensation is now a
105kg powerhouse, but he certainly wasn't always built that way.
Former Northampton flanker Grant Seely, who coached Pollock at Stowe School, recalled: “He wasn’t in any way big. He was actually built like a long-distance runner, if anything.”
That soon changed as Pollock progressed through Northampton's system.
Eight or nine gym sessions a week
Henry Pollock previously revealed the extraordinary work required to add size to his frame.
“I’ve just come off a five-week gym block at the club,” he said.
“It’s been quite hard because I have been doing
eight to nine gym sessions a week and eating until you almost can’t eat any more, and then repeating it again the next day.”
Pollock has since bulked up by around
10kg, developing into
one of English rugby's most impressive athletes.
His reported numbers are staggering. The back-rower can
squat 230kg for three reps, bench press around
140kg and reach sprinting speeds of approximately
10 metres per second.
Northampton strength and conditioning coach Jason Sivil believes Pollock is a genuine physical outlier.
“I’ve been working in this field for 20 years and there are very, very few players as gifted as Henry is,” he said.
“He’s unbelievably powerful. Henry has very good speed and very good strength, and because he is high on both of those metrics, his power is through the roof.”
Perhaps most impressively, adding considerable muscle hasn't cost Pollock his extraordinary engine. He has reportedly completed the gruelling Bronco fitness test in around four minutes and 25 seconds.
It's some transformation from the skinny youngster Seely first encountered.
“I never thought he’d play at No 8,” he admitted. “But his power is deceptive and he’s a real specimen now.”
