5 Bold Predictions: United Rugby Championship Play-Offs

Four stacked fixtures are in store to get the knock-out action up and running, with Glasgow Warriors set to host Connacht this evening at Scotstoun Stadium, before three Saturday clashes will see the playing field whittled down from eight teams to four.

The Bulls host Munster at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday's early kick off, before Cardiff head to Cape Town for a battle against the third-placed Stormers. We return back up to the Northern Hemisphere for the late kick-off, as Leinster host the Lions at the Aviva Stadium, as Leo Cullen's men pursue a successful URC title defence after their Champions Cup heartbreak.

In this article, we are mapping out our predictions for the incoming United Rugby Championship play-offs, and picking who we think will be crowned champion at the end of the season.

We kick off our predictions with tonight's opening quarter-final, as Glasgow Warriors host Connacht at the Scotstoun Stadium. Despite the fairy-tale story that saw the Galweigians snatch the eighth spot from Ulster, and qualify for the knock-out stage, it looks like the end of the road for Stuart Lancaster's side tonight in Glasgow. A Warriors win is expected, yet a gutsy Connacht side will go down swinging.

Meanwhile, we see the second quarter-final panning out in a similarly expected fashion, with Leinster bouncing back from their Champions Cup final drubbing to Bordeaux-Begles, and bagging a convincing win over the Lions in Dublin. With Leo Cullen under plenty of pressure following another defeat in the European Cup final, the Leinster coach will be sharpening up the boys in blue for a one-sided win over the first-time play off qualifying Johannesburg side.

Continuing on with our quarter-final predictions, we head down to the land of the Springboks for back-to-back URC knock-out games in South Africa. First up, we can see the Bulls getting the better of a battered and bruised Munster side, that are without a plethora of their top talents for the must-win match. The likes of Jack Crowley, Tadhg Beirne, Edwin Edogbo, Tom Farrell, Oli Jager and Calvin Knash are all unavailable, with a disastrous injury list handing the advantage to the men from Pretoria.

We anticipate Saturday's action to continue with a second win from the South African sides, as Stormers take on Cardiff in Cape Town. Whilst the Welsh side will arrive at the DHL Stadium upon a wave of momentum from their recent win over the heavily-rotated Stormers, a full-strength outfit of blue and whites will take some stopping in the heat of their home stadium. Despite the recent win at the Arms Park, we expect the Stormers to cruise on through to the semi-finals tomorrow afternoon.

We are dealing in the hypotheticals now, as we attempt to predict three further matches that are yet to be confirmed. We begin with our first envisioned semi-final, that sees Glasgow Warriors host the Bulls at their resident fortress of Scotstoun. We expect a tense, atritional encounter between the two sides, with plenty of physicality dished out from the two hulking packs.

The Warriors will leave it all on the pitch and just creep home following a late try. We can see the scores tied up at 18-18, before Kyle Steyn intercepts a looping pass from Willie le Roux, and takes off along the touch-line to send the city of Glasgow into a frenzy. All it takes to decide this dead-locked match would be a single lapse in judgement, as the Warriors march on to a home-hosted final.

Then the action heads back across to the Irish capital, as despite finishing in the top four, Leinster (2nd) earn the home-field advantage for their semi-final against the third-placed Stormers. However, following the recent final-hurdle falling of the Champions Cup final, Leo Cullen's men would have to overcome the mental obstacle of not bottling the moments, with the slightest uncertainty playing to Stormers hands.

The Stormers arrive in Dublin as the ultimate party-crashers, and have proven this season that they have all the credentials to upset the favourites. With Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu leading the star-studded back-line, the Stormers would attempt to catch Leinster out on the counter-charge and squeeze every inch out of a frustrated Dublin side.

We can foresee Leinster leading until around the 76th minute, before a penalty at the breakdown hands Feinberg-Mngomezulu a late crack at goal. The Springbok sends a neat strike straight through the posts, with the Stormers put ahead into closing moments, and silence the crowd at the Aviva Stadium.

5. FINAL: GLASGOW CROWNED CHAMPIONS WITH RESOLVED PERFORMANCE

It then all comes down to the Grand Final, and we predict a battle between Glasgow Warriors and the Stormers to ensue with the title on the line. Having been the most complete team across the URC this season, and the rightful holders of the top-spot and home-field advantage heading into the play-offs, we predict Glasgow Warriors to take the crown from the end of the 2025/26 URC season.

It will not be an easy final for Franco Smith's men, yet we can see the Stormers hitting their peak in the semi-final dramatics against Leinster. The Warriors will weather the storm of the South African side, with the likes of Sione Tuipulotu and Huw Jones being too much for the Cape Town club to contain. The Scots last lifted the URC title back in 2024, following their stunning away comeback win over the Bulls in South Africa. Should the Glaswegians make it all the way to a home-hosted final, you would not bet against them to seal the silverware.
